Tips family and friends
If someone close to you is struggling with psychological problems, it can also affect your life and that of your family. These tips for loved ones and family may help you deal with the situation.
Search information
The more you know about your loved one's psychological problems, the better you can learn to deal with them. If you know more about the symptoms of the disease, the course, and treatment options, it can help you deal with it. Information about how the assistance works or information about patient and family organizations can also offer support.
Be open about your situation
Many people find it difficult to speak out if someone close to them has mental health problems. They may be ashamed or afraid of misunderstanding. As a result, they find themselves alone and sometimes put in a huge amount of effort to keep up appearances. This causes a lot of stress. Confiding in someone makes you stronger. Telling your story can bring you relief, understanding, support, and new ideas. You don't have to do this with everyone: choose one or more people you trust. You can also tell your story to your GP, a social worker or other professional counsellor or telephone helpline.
Sometimes support from peers is an option: one-on-one, in a peer group, on the internet or in a course.
You don't have to do it alone!
Support from people around you enables you to handle difficult situations better. Ask for support is not a sing of weakness: but a sign of strength. It is good to ask yourself what support you need and who you want to ask what in advance. Do you need practical help, such as with housekeeping, arranging things or with transport? Or do you want more information, for example from your doctor? Or are you looking for emotional support or someone to talk to? Think about the right person. You can also receive professional help or get into contact with peer groups or family organizations.
At Preventie, we can help you with personal advice or courses. There are also online self-help, programs you can follow on your computer at home. Feel free to contact us!
