Search information
The more you know about your loved one's psychological problems, the better you can learn to deal with them. When you know more about the symptoms of the disease, the course, treatment options, it can help you deal with it. Information about how the assistance works or information about patient and family organizations can also support you.
Be open about your situation
Many people find it difficult to talk about it if someone close to them has mental health problems. They are ashamed or afraid of misunderstanding. As a result, they are on their own and sometimes have to bend over backwards to keep up appearances. That causes a lot of stress. Confiding in someone actually makes you stronger. Telling your story can bring you relief, understanding, support, and new ideas. You don't have to do that with everyone: choose one or more people you trust. You can also tell your story to your GP, a social worker or other professional counsellor and telephone helpline.
Sometimes support from peers is an option: one-on-one, in a peer group, on the internet or in a course.
You don't have to do it alone!
Support from people around you makes it possible to handle difficult situations better. It is not weak to ask for support: that is a sign of strength. It is good to ask yourself in advance what support you need and who you want to ask what. Do you need practical help, such as with housekeeping, arranging things, transport? Or do you want more information, for example from your doctor? Or are you looking for emotional support and a listening ear? Think about the right person. Professional help is also possible or contact with peer groups or family organizations.
